Surgery & Your Pet

Surgery can be stressful for you and your pet, but it is important to remember that surgery is a treatment for your pet’s ailments and is meant to be helpful in the long run. We will help you understand the purpose of the surgery and answer any questions you may have about the surgery itself or the recovery process. We are here for you and your pet throughout the surgical process.

Swift Creek Animal Hospital offers a broad range of surgical procedures for your pets, such as:

• Spays and Neuter: This straightforward surgery sterilizes your pet, rendering them unable to bear or sire offspring.
• Biopsies: Biopsies take a sample of tissue from your pet, such as from their skin or internal organs, for further medical testing.
• Dental Cleaning and Extractions: Dental procedures for pets require anesthesia because your pet will not stay still for their cleaning or extraction.
• General Surgery: We also offer a broad range of other surgeries for internal medicine, wounds, fractures, and more. We will work with you to understand your pet’s surgical needs.

It is important to make sure that your pet is fasted for their procedure. Don't worry - we will send you a friendly reminder, but don't forget to withhold food and water after 6pm the evening before surgery. If your pet normally takes medications, give us a call to consult with your veterinarian for further instruction. You should plan to drop off early the morning of surgery between 7:30 - 8:00am. Our technicians will be ready to get your pet checked in and answer any questions you have.

After your pet is out of surgery, it is important that their aftercare is taken seriously. A surgery is really only as good as its aftercare! Ensuring that your pet recovers and heals properly after surgery is the best thing you can do for your furry friend.

Immediately following your pet’s surgery, we will let you know when your pet can resume eating and drinking normally. Because of the anesthesia, your pet will need to ease back into their normal eating and drinking habits. But don’t worry! We will make sure you know what to give your pet and when.

Your veterinarian will send you home with detailed instructions for your pet’s post-surgical care. We will include things like a list of permissible activities, such as easy walks, and activities that your pet should avoid, such as jumping onto furniture. You should keep your pet comfortable throughout their recovery and keep an eye on the surgical site. If you notice that the incision is looking red, puffy, or if it is weeping puss or blood, give us a call right away as this could be a sign of infection.
